Indonesian Meat Pastry Bites 2

Indonesian Meat Pastry Bites 2 is a beloved staple of home kitchens across the archipelago, often gracing tables during casual family meals or shared weekend gatherings. This dish reflects the essence of Indonesian home cooking, where the balance of salt, the richness of fat, and the art of sharing take precedence over rigid recipes or formal occasions.

Expect a satisfying crunch from the golden pastry, giving way to a savory filling of seasoned beef and soft onion. The flavors are simple yet comforting, allowing the quality of the ingredients to shine. Serve them hot, inviting everyone to reach in and enjoy these bites fresh from the pan.

Ingredients

  • 300 gground beef
  • 1onion
  • 12pastry wrappers
  • for fryingoil
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by finely chopping 1 onion. This will ensure even cooking and a consistent texture throughout the filling. Set aside the chopped onion and measure out 300 g of ground beef, ensuring it is at room temperature for even cooking.
  2. In a large skillet, heat enough oil to generously coat the bottom over medium heat. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Use a wooden spoon to break up the beef into small pieces, ensuring it cooks evenly. Continue to cook until the beef is browned and cooked through, with no pink remaining.
  4. Season the beef and onion mixture with fine sea salt and black pepper to taste. Stir well to combine, allowing the flavors to meld together. Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning if necessary, keeping in mind that the filling should be flavorful and well-seasoned.
  5. Lay out 12 pastry wrappers on a clean surface. Spoon a small amount of the beef mixture onto the center of each wrapper, being careful not to overfill. Fold the wrappers over the filling to form a sealed edge, pressing down gently to ensure they are secure.
  6. In a separate pan, heat enough oil for frying over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the filled pastry bites in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until the pastry is golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  7. Remove the cooked pastry bites from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Finish with a light sprinkle of salt while they are still hot.
  8. Serve the Indonesian Meat Pastry Bites immediately, while they are warm and crispy, making them perfect for sharing around the table.
