Japanese Meat Pastry Bites 3

Japanese Meat Pastry Bites 3 is a cherished home-cooked delight, perfect for casual family gatherings or an intimate dinner with friends. This version captures the essence of Japanese home tables, where ingredients are measured by instinct and generosity. The hand-seasoned salt and ample use of fat are signatures of this comforting dish, making it a staple across many households.

Each bite offers a harmonious blend of savory ground beef and sweet onions, enveloped in a crisp pastry wrapper. The exterior gives way to a succulent interior, seasoned carefully with fine sea salt and black pepper. These bites deliver a satisfying crunch, followed by a rich, hearty flavor that lingers pleasantly.

Ingredients

  • 300 gground beef
  • 1onion
  • 12pastry wrappers
  • for fryingoil
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Peel and finely chop the onion, ensuring the pieces are small enough to mix well with the ground beef. This will help the flavors meld together and ensure even cooking. Set the chopped onion aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 300 g of ground beef with the chopped onion. Season the mixture with fine sea salt and black pepper to taste, mixing thoroughly with your hands until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Lay out the 12 pastry wrappers on a clean surface. Place a small spoonful of the beef and onion mixture in the center of each wrapper, being careful not to overfill to prevent bursting during cooking.
  4. Fold each pastry wrapper over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly to seal, using a little water if necessary to ensure a tight seal. This will prevent the filling from leaking out during frying.
  5. In a large frying pan, heat enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan over medium-high heat. The oil is ready when a small piece of pastry sizzles upon contact.
  6. Carefully place the sealed pastry bites into the hot oil, ensuring they are not overcrowded in the pan. Fry them until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides, turning them gently with tongs. This should take about 3-4 minutes per side, but adjust as needed based on the color and texture.
  7. Once the pastry bites are golden and crispy, remove them from the pan and drain on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
  8. Finish with a light sprinkle of fine sea salt while the bites are still warm. Serve immediately, allowing everyone to enjoy the crisp exterior and savory filling.
