Japanese Meat Pastry Bites

Japanese Meat Pastry Bites are a delightful dish often found in home kitchens across Japan. These savory treats are typically enjoyed as part of a casual family meal or shared during a relaxed gathering with friends. Each bite-sized piece is a reflection of the warmth and comfort found in Japanese home cooking, where the emphasis is on simple yet satisfying flavors.

As you take a bite, expect the rich, savory taste of seasoned ground beef, perfectly complemented by the sweetness of caramelized onions. The crisp golden pastry wrapper provides a satisfying crunch, giving way to the succulent filling inside. Generous amounts of salt and a hint of black pepper highlight the natural flavors, creating a harmonious balance that invites you to reach for another.

Ingredients

  • 300 gground beef
  • 1onion
  • 12pastry wrappers
  • for fryingoil
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by finely dicing 1 onion. This will ensure it cooks evenly and blends well with the ground beef. Set the diced onion aside for later use.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 300 g of ground beef with the diced onion. Season the mixture with fine sea salt and black pepper to taste, mixing thoroughly with your hands until the ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Lay out 12 pastry wrappers on a clean surface. Place a small spoonful of the beef and onion mixture in the center of each wrapper, being careful not to overfill them.
  4. Fold each pastry wrapper over the filling to create a half-moon shape, pressing the edges firmly to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch and to ensure they are tightly sealed.
  5. In a large frying pan, heat enough oil for frying over medium-high heat. The oil is ready when a small piece of pastry dropped in sizzles immediately.
  6. Carefully place the sealed pastry bites into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them until they are golden brown on both sides, turning them once during cooking. This should result in a crispy exterior and a fully cooked interior.
  7. Once fried, remove the pastry bites from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
  8. Finish by lightly sprinkling the pastry bites with additional fine sea salt while they are still warm. Serve immediately, allowing everyone to enjoy the crispy, savory bites while they are hot.
