Middle Eastern Meat Pastry Bites 2

Middle Eastern Meat Pastry Bites are a beloved staple, often gracing the tables of family gatherings and festive celebrations across the region. This home-cooked version captures the essence of a dish passed down through generations, where each cook adds their touch. The simplicity of ground beef and onion, enveloped in delicate pastry, reflects a tradition that values flavor and comfort over complexity.

These bites are a symphony of savory richness, with the beef's umami balanced by the sweetness of softly sautéed onions. The pastry, fried to golden perfection, offers a satisfying crunch that gives way to its tender filling. Salt and pepper, measured by intuition, enhance the natural flavors, making them irresistible. Enjoy them hot, fresh from the pan, as a shared offering on a communal plate.

Ingredients

  • 300 gground beef
  • 1onion
  • 12pastry wrappers
  • for fryingoil
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by finely chopping 1 onion. This will ensure it cooks evenly and blends well with the ground beef, creating a cohesive filling. Set the chopped onion aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 300 g ground beef with the chopped onion. Season the mixture generously with fine sea salt and black pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly using your hands until the onion is evenly distributed throughout the beef.
  3. Lay out the 12 pastry wrappers on a clean surface. Place a small spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each wrapper, being careful not to overfill. Fold the wrappers over the filling, sealing the edges by pressing firmly with your fingers or using a fork to crimp, ensuring no filling escapes during cooking.
  4. Heat a generous amount of oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. The oil should be enough to cover the bottom of the pan, allowing the pastries to fry evenly. Test the oil's readiness by dropping a small piece of pastry into the pan; it should sizzle immediately.
  5. Carefully place the filled pastries into the hot oil, ensuring they do not overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches if necessary. Cook until the pastries are golden brown and crispy on both sides, turning them once during cooking. The aroma of the cooked beef and onion should be fragrant and inviting.
  6. Once cooked, remove the pastries from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. While still warm, sprinkle a little more fine sea salt over the pastries to enhance their flavor.
  7. Serve the Middle Eastern Meat Pastry Bites immediately, while they are hot and crispy. These bites are perfect for sharing, embodying the spirit of Middle Eastern home cooking.
