Pakistani Meat Pastry Bites 2

Pakistani Meat Pastry Bites 2 are a beloved staple across the tables of Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Islamabad. Although each city adds its own subtle twist, this home version encapsulates the essence of Pakistani family cooking, where salt is judged by hand and fat is used with a generous spirit. These bites are often made for festive occasions or casual gatherings, reflecting the communal nature of Pakistani dining.

The flavor is a comforting blend of savory ground beef, finely chopped onion, and the warm embrace of sea salt and black pepper. Encased in a crispy, fried pastry wrapper, each bite offers a satisfying crunch followed by a burst of juicy, seasoned filling. Perfect for sharing, these bites invite everyone at the table to reach in and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 300 gground beef
  • 1onion
  • 12pastry wrappers
  • for fryingoil
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by finely chopping 1 onion. This will ensure that the onion cooks evenly and blends well with the ground beef, providing a consistent flavor throughout the filling.
  2. In a medium-sized skillet, add enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan generously. Heat the oil over medium heat until it shimmers, indicating it's hot enough to start cooking.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until it becomes translucent and soft. This will take about 3 to 4 minutes, and the onion should release a sweet aroma, which indicates it's ready for the next step.
  4. Add 300 g of ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Use a wooden spoon to break up the beef into small pieces. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through, with no pink remaining. This should take about 5 to 7 minutes, and the beef will release its juices, which should mostly evaporate.
  5. Season the beef mixture with fine sea salt and black pepper to taste. Stir well to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary, keeping in mind that the filling should be flavorful enough to stand out against the pastry.
  6. Lay out 12 pastry wrappers on a clean surface. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each wrapper. Be careful not to overfill, as this will make it difficult to seal the pastries properly.
  7. Fold each pastry wrapper over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges together firmly, using a fork to crimp and seal the edges. This will prevent the filling from leaking out during frying.
  8. In a large frying pan, heat enough oil to submerge the pastry bites halfway. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the pastry bites in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until the pastries are golden brown and crispy on both sides, which should take about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  9. Remove the fried pastry bites from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil. Serve immediately while they are hot and crispy, perfect for sharing around the table.
