American Yogurt Drink

American Yogurt Drink is a refreshing staple that echoes the simplicity and comfort of home cooking in the United States. It's often prepared with a no-nonsense approach, where the salt is measured by instinct and the richness of yogurt is embraced fully. This drink appears frequently at family gatherings, served alongside an array of dishes, or simply enjoyed on a warm afternoon.

The taste is a creamy blend of tangy yogurt, a hint of salt, and the chill of cold water and ice. It feels both soothing and invigorating, offering a rich texture that refreshes with each sip. This homemade version, free from pretension, is perfect for anyone who craves a straightforward yet delightful beverage.

Ingredients

  • 400 gyogurt
  • 300 mlcold water
  • 1/2 tspfine sea salt
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Start by ensuring all your ingredients are chilled. Place 400 g of yogurt in the refrigerator for at least an hour if it isn't already cold. This step is crucial as it enhances the refreshing quality of the drink.
  2. Once the yogurt is thoroughly chilled, measure 300 ml of cold water. Use a measuring cup to ensure accuracy, as the right balance of yogurt to water is essential for the traditional texture and flavor of the drink.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chilled yogurt and cold water. Use a whisk to gently blend them together until the mixture is smooth and uniform. Be careful not to whisk too vigorously, as this can cause the yogurt to lose its creamy texture.
  4. Add 1/2 tsp of fine sea salt to the yogurt mixture. Stir gently until the salt is fully dissolved. The salt should enhance the flavor without overpowering the natural tanginess of the yogurt.
  5. Prepare your serving glasses by adding ice cubes to each one. The ice will keep the drink refreshingly cold, which is key to its traditional enjoyment.
  6. Pour the yogurt drink into the prepared glasses, filling them about three-quarters full to leave room for the ice. Serve immediately to enjoy the drink at its best, with the chill of the ice and the creamy, tangy flavor of the yogurt perfectly balanced.
