Caribbean Fruit Drink

Caribbean Fruit Drink is a refreshing staple at home tables across the islands, known for its ability to cool and invigorate on sun-drenched afternoons. Unlike its commercial counterparts, this version is an expression of Caribbean hospitality and resourcefulness, crafted with the same care and pride that goes into a family meal. It's a drink that finds its place alongside hearty dishes, offering a pause of citrus brightness amidst the flavors of a bustling kitchen.

The drink should capture the essence of ripe citrus, with the tartness of lemons or the sweetness of oranges harmonizing with just the right touch of sugar. Ice ensures it is a chilled companion to any meal, offering a crisp and clean contrast to the warmth of typical Caribbean fare. Each sip is a reminder of simpler gatherings, where the joy of shared flavors and the ease of conversation flow as freely as the drink itself.

Ingredients

  • 4lemons or oranges
  • 100 gsugar
  • 1 Lwater
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the citrus fruits. If using lemons, roll each lemon on the countertop with your palm to soften them, which will help release more juice. Cut the lemons or oranges in half and use a juicer to extract the juice. You should aim to get about 250 ml of juice in total. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher to remove any seeds or pulp.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 100 g of sugar with 1 L of water. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the sugar is completely dissolved. You are looking for a clear syrup with no visible sugar granules. This step ensures the sweetness is evenly distributed throughout the drink.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the syrup to cool slightly. This is important to prevent the heat from dissipating the fresh citrus aroma when combined. Transfer the cooled syrup into the pitcher with the citrus juice.
  4. Stir the mixture gently with a long spoon to combine the citrus juice and sugar syrup thoroughly. This gentle mixing helps to preserve the delicate citrus aromas, which are a hallmark of the Caribbean Fruit Drink.
  5. Prepare your serving glasses by filling them with ice. The ice will chill the drink quickly, making it refreshing and perfect for a warm day. Pour the fruit drink over the ice, filling each glass to the brim.
  6. Serve the Caribbean Fruit Drink immediately in traditional glassware. The drink should have a vibrant color and a refreshing citrus scent. Enjoy this drink as a refreshing accompaniment to a meal or as a standalone treat.
