Caribbean Spiced Tea 2

Caribbean Spiced Tea 2 is a cherished staple on home tables across the islands, offering a warming embrace at any time of the day. This version captures the essence of family traditions, where each cook measures salt by instinct and adds fat with a generous hand, ensuring the table is always set for sharing. It is a reflection of everyday life, where recipes are passed down and adapted, not penned down.

The tea is a fragrant blend, where the earthy depth of tea leaves meets the gentle heat of spices and sweetness to taste. It is a comforting brew that evokes the laid-back island spirit, served with a nod to the culinary wisdom that comes from generations of Caribbean home cooks.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsptea leaves
  • 500 mlwater
  • to tastespices
  • to tastesugar

Method

  1. Start by bringing 500 ml of water to a gentle boil in a medium-sized saucepan. Use medium heat to ensure the water heats evenly without evaporating too quickly. As the water begins to boil, you'll notice small bubbles forming and rising to the surface.
  2. Once the water is boiling, add 2 tablespoons of tea leaves to the saucepan. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to ensure the leaves are fully submerged and begin to release their flavor. You should notice the water starting to change color, becoming darker as the tea infuses.
  3. Add your chosen spices to taste. Common choices include cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice, but feel free to experiment with your favorites. Stir gently to combine, allowing the spices to mingle with the tea. The aroma should become more complex and inviting as the spices warm.
  4. Sweeten the tea by adding sugar to taste. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved, ensuring a smooth, balanced sweetness that complements the spices. Taste the tea to adjust the sweetness if necessary, aiming for a harmonious blend of flavors.
  5. Once the tea has reached your desired flavor, remove the saucepan from the heat. Strain the tea into a teapot or directly into cups using a fine mesh strainer to catch the tea leaves and spices. The liquid should be clear and aromatic, free of any solid particles.
  6. Serve the Caribbean Spiced Tea immediately in traditional glassware if available. The tea should be warm and fragrant, perfect for sharing with family and friends around the table. Enjoy the rich, spiced flavors that reflect the warmth of Caribbean hospitality.
