Chinese Spiced Tea 2

Chinese Spiced Tea 2 is a beloved staple in home kitchens across China, capturing the essence of familial cooking. This particular version reflects the intimate touch of home preparation, where the salt is measured by intuition, and the richness of fat is embraced. It's a tea that invites sharing, a common thread in Chinese culinary practices, often enjoyed in the warmth of a shared meal.

The tea exudes a deep aroma, marrying the robustness of tea leaves with a hint of sweetness and spice that dances subtly on the palate. The flavors are bold yet balanced, offering a comforting warmth that lingers. This tea is less about ceremony and more about the comforting embrace of a familiar family table, where each sip speaks of home.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsptea leaves
  • 500 mlwater
  • to tastespices
  • to tastesugar

Method

  1. Begin by bringing 500 ml of water to a gentle boil in a medium saucepan. Use a medium heat setting to ensure the water heats evenly without boiling too vigorously, which can affect the delicate flavors of the tea.
  2. Once the water reaches a gentle boil, add 2 tablespoons of tea leaves to the saucepan. Stir gently to ensure the leaves are fully submerged, allowing them to release their flavors into the water.
  3. Add your chosen spices to the saucepan. Traditional options might include star anise, cinnamon, or cloves, but feel free to adjust to your taste. Stir gently to combine, ensuring the spices are evenly distributed throughout the liquid.
  4. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 5-7 minutes. You will know it's ready when the aroma of the spices becomes rich and fragrant, and the color of the liquid deepens to a warm amber.
  5. Taste the tea and add sugar to your preference, stirring until it dissolves completely. The sweetness should complement the spices without overpowering them, creating a balanced flavor profile.
  6. Once the sugar is fully dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat. Strain the tea into a teapot or directly into serving cups to remove the tea leaves and spices, ensuring a smooth drinking experience.
  7. Serve the Chinese Spiced Tea 2 immediately in traditional glassware, if available, to enhance the experience. The tea should be enjoyed warm, allowing the full depth of flavors to be appreciated.
