Colombian Fruit Drink 2

Colombian Fruit Drink 2 is a cherished staple at home gatherings across Colombia, celebrated for its simplicity and refreshment. This version captures the essence of family kitchens where ingredients are added with intuition rather than measurement, and the drink is crafted to be enjoyed with loved ones. Whether served at a sunny afternoon lunch or as a cooling treat during a warm evening, it embodies the warmth of Colombian hospitality.

The drink's vibrant citrus notes from lemons or oranges dance with the sweetness of sugar, creating a harmonious balance that is both invigorating and satisfying. Served over ice, each sip offers a crisp, refreshing taste that quenches the thirst and delights the senses, making it a perfect companion to any shared meal.

Ingredients

  • 4lemons or oranges
  • 100 gsugar
  • 1 Lwater
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the citrus fruits. If using lemons, roll them on the countertop with gentle pressure to release more juice. Cut the lemons or oranges in half and squeeze the juice into a large bowl or pitcher, ensuring no seeds fall in. You should have about 250 ml of juice.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 100 g of sugar with 1 L of water. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir until the sugar completely dissolves. The liquid should become clear, indicating the sugar is fully integrated.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the sugar water to cool slightly. This step is crucial to prevent the citrus juice from cooking and losing its fresh flavor when combined.
  4. Once the sugar water has cooled to room temperature, pour it into the bowl or pitcher with the citrus juice. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to combine, ensuring the mixture is homogenous without creating foam, which can dull the drink's aroma.
  5. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the drink to become refreshingly cold. This chilling step is essential for the traditional taste and experience.
  6. When ready to serve, fill a glass with ice cubes. Pour the chilled fruit drink over the ice, filling each glass to the brim. The ice will keep the drink cold and refreshing, enhancing the citrus flavors.
  7. Serve immediately in traditional glassware, if available, to honor the Colombian tradition. Enjoy the drink with family or friends, embracing the spirit of sharing that is central to Colombian home cooking.
