Filipino Spiced Tea

Filipino Spiced Tea is a comforting brew often enjoyed in the late afternoon, bringing warmth and a gentle pick-me-up as the day transitions into evening. Rooted in Filipino home cooking traditions, this tea is lovingly crafted with a generous hand for seasoning and a heart for sharing. While it may not be the centerpiece of a meal, it offers a moment of respite amid the day's hustle, a reminder of the simple joys found in everyday rituals.

Expect a cup that balances the robust earthiness of tea leaves with the aromatic allure of spices, sweetened to your liking. The flavors mingle in a way that is both bold and soothing, offering a comforting embrace in every sip. Enjoy it as a quiet pause in the day, a shared moment at the family table, or simply as a personal indulgence.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsptea leaves
  • 500 mlwater
  • to tastespices
  • to tastesugar

Method

  1. Start by bringing 500 ml of water to a gentle boil in a medium-sized saucepan. Use a medium heat setting to ensure the water heats evenly without evaporating too quickly. This step is crucial as it forms the base of your Filipino Spiced Tea, capturing the essence of the tea leaves and spices.
  2. Once the water reaches a boil, add 2 tablespoons of tea leaves to the saucepan. Stir gently with a spoon to ensure the leaves are fully submerged and begin to release their flavor. Allow the tea leaves to steep until the water takes on a rich, amber color, indicating that the tea has infused properly.
  3. Carefully measure and add your chosen spices to the saucepan. Common spices include cinnamon, star anise, or cloves, but adjust according to your preference. Stir the mixture gently to combine, ensuring that the spices are evenly distributed throughout the tea, which will enhance the aroma and flavor.
  4. Add sugar to taste, stirring until it completely dissolves. Taste the tea to ensure the sweetness is balanced with the spices, adjusting as necessary. The sugar should complement the spices, creating a harmonious blend that is neither too sweet nor too spicy.
  5. Once the tea has reached a desirable flavor balance, remove the saucepan from heat. Allow it to cool slightly, which helps the flavors meld together more effectively.
  6. Strain the tea into a teapot or directly into traditional glassware, using a fine mesh strainer to catch the tea leaves and spices. This ensures a smooth, clear tea without any sediment, preserving the delicate flavors.
  7. Serve the Filipino Spiced Tea immediately while it's warm, in traditional glassware if available. The warmth and aroma should be inviting, perfect for sharing with family or friends around the table.
