Filipino Yogurt Drink

Filipino Yogurt Drink is a refreshing staple at many Filipino home tables, offering a cooling respite from the tropical climate. It's a simple yet cherished beverage, often prepared to accompany meals or to provide a soothing drink throughout the day. As a home kitchen favorite, this drink reflects the Filipino way of cooking—intuitive and generous, with salt added by feel and the table always ready for sharing.

The taste is a delicate balance of creamy yogurt and a hint of saltiness, mingling with the crispness of cold water and ice. This drink is smooth and subtly tangy, with a texture that is both creamy and refreshing. It's a straightforward delight that speaks of home and comfort, perfect for quenching thirst and complementing the bold flavors of Filipino cuisine.

Ingredients

  • 400 gyogurt
  • 300 mlcold water
  • 1/2 tspfine sea salt
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by chilling your serving glasses in the refrigerator. This ensures that the yogurt drink stays cold and refreshing when served, which is essential for the traditional experience.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, measure out 400 g of yogurt. Use a whisk to gently stir the yogurt until it becomes smooth and creamy, ensuring there are no lumps. This step is crucial for achieving a consistent texture in your drink.
  3. Slowly add 300 ml of cold water to the yogurt, pouring it in a steady stream. As you pour, continue to whisk gently to combine the yogurt and water thoroughly. The mixture should become thinner and have a uniform consistency, resembling a smooth, pourable liquid.
  4. Add 1/2 tsp of fine sea salt to the yogurt mixture. Stir gently with the whisk until the salt is fully dissolved. The salt enhances the flavor of the yogurt, giving it a subtle savory note that is characteristic of this drink.
  5. Prepare a serving pitcher by filling it with ice. This will help keep the drink cold when served. Carefully pour the yogurt mixture over the ice in the pitcher, allowing it to chill further.
  6. Serve the Filipino Yogurt Drink immediately in the chilled glasses. The drink should be cold and refreshing, with a creamy texture and a slight tang from the yogurt, balanced by the hint of salt. Enjoy it as a delightful accompaniment to a meal or as a refreshing beverage on its own.
