Indonesian Fruit Drink 2

Indonesian Fruit Drink 2 is a cherished refreshment, often prepared by home cooks across the archipelago. It's a staple during family meals or gatherings, where the simplicity of its ingredients showcases the hands-on, generous approach of Indonesian home cooking. This drink is a quintessential example of how everyday ingredients can be transformed into something delightful, offering a taste that is both familiar and comforting.

This drink is a bright, citrus-forward experience, with the zing of lemons or oranges balanced by the sweetness of sugar. When served ice-cold, it becomes a refreshing antidote to the tropical heat. The generous use of ingredients and the careful hand-judged salt make each sip a vivid interplay of flavors, embodying the spirit of Indonesian hospitality.

Ingredients

  • 4lemons or oranges
  • 100 gsugar
  • 1 Lwater
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the citrus fruits. If using lemons, roll them on the counter with gentle pressure to release more juice. If using oranges, peel them and remove as much of the white pith as possible to avoid bitterness. Slice the fruits in half and juice them, aiming for about 200 ml of juice. Strain the juice to remove any seeds or pulp for a smooth drink.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 100 g of sugar and 1 L of water. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir occasionally until the sugar is fully dissolved. This creates a simple syrup that will sweeten the drink without any graininess.
  3. Once the sugar is dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Add the strained citrus juice to the syrup, stirring gently to combine. This ensures the flavors meld without losing the fresh citrus aroma.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a large pitcher and place it in the refrigerator to chill thoroughly. This step is crucial for the flavors to develop and for the drink to be refreshing when served.
  5. When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour the chilled fruit drink over the ice, allowing the cold to enhance the crispness of the citrus.
  6. Serve immediately in traditional Indonesian glassware if available, to honor the cultural roots of the dish. Enjoy the balance of sweet and tangy flavors, perfect for sharing at the table.
