Indonesian Yogurt Drink

Indonesian Yogurt Drink is a staple at home tables across Indonesia, appreciated for its refreshing qualities and simple preparation. This version captures the essence of how family cooks prepare it, emphasizing the balance of salt and the richness of yogurt. It's a drink meant to be shared, often served during family meals, offering a cool contrast to the warm and spicy dishes that accompany it.

The drink has a creamy texture, lightened by the addition of cold water and a touch of salt that enhances the yogurt's tanginess. Ice is added generously, ensuring each sip is crisp and revitalizing. It delivers a delightful combination of smoothness and chill, making it a perfect companion to savory meals.

Ingredients

  • 400 gyogurt
  • 300 mlcold water
  • 1/2 tspfine sea salt
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Start by chilling the yogurt. Take 400 g of yogurt and place it in the refrigerator for at least an hour. This ensures the yogurt is cold and refreshing, which is essential for the traditional Indonesian Yogurt Drink experience.
  2. Once the yogurt is chilled, measure 300 ml of cold water. The water should be as cold as possible to maintain the drink's refreshing quality. This step is crucial to achieve the right consistency and temperature.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chilled yogurt and cold water. Use a whisk to gently mix them together until the mixture is smooth and well-blended. Avoid vigorous stirring to preserve the delicate aromas of the yogurt.
  4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of fine sea salt to the yogurt mixture. Stir gently to incorporate the salt evenly throughout the drink. The salt enhances the flavor, bringing out the natural tanginess of the yogurt.
  5. Prepare a serving pitcher by adding ice as needed. The ice will keep the drink cold and refreshing when served. Pour the yogurt mixture over the ice in the pitcher.
  6. Serve the Indonesian Yogurt Drink immediately in traditional glassware. The drink should be creamy and slightly frothy, with a balanced taste of tanginess and a hint of saltiness. Enjoy it as a refreshing accompaniment to your meal.
