Matcha Latte

Serves 4 to 6 vegan

Matcha Latte

Matcha Latte, a vibrant green treat, has its roots in the cozy kissaten, the beloved Japanese coffeehouses known for their comforting ambiance. While traditionally enjoyed as a leisurely afternoon indulgence, this home version captures the essence of those nostalgic moments, offering a serene break from a bustling day. The recipe is passed down with a personal touch, reflecting the care and generosity of a family meal.

In each sip, you'll find the earthy depth of matcha balanced with creamy milk, a hint of sweetness, and a subtle whisper of salt. This harmonious blend creates a velvety texture, inviting you to savor every moment. Pour yourself a cup, and let the warmth envelop you like a comforting hug.

Ingredients

  • 2 tspmatcha
  • 50 mlhot water
  • 200 mlmilk
  • to tastesugar
  • 1 pinchsalt

Method

  1. Begin by preparing the matcha base. Sift 2 teaspoons of matcha powder into a small bowl to remove any clumps, ensuring a smooth texture. Add 50 ml of hot water, which should be just below boiling, around 80°C, to preserve the delicate flavors of the matcha. Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) to whisk the matcha and water in a zigzag motion until the mixture is frothy and all powder is dissolved, resulting in a vibrant green color.
  2. Next, heat 200 ml of milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally to prevent a skin from forming on the surface. Heat until the milk is steaming and small bubbles form around the edges, but do not let it come to a boil. This gentle heating helps maintain the milk's sweetness and creamy texture.
  3. Once the milk is ready, remove it from the heat and add a pinch of salt. This step enhances the natural sweetness of the milk and balances the flavors of the matcha. Stir the milk gently to dissolve the salt completely.
  4. Carefully combine the matcha mixture with the heated milk. Pour the matcha into the milk slowly, stirring continuously to blend the two components evenly. The final mixture should have a uniform light green color and a smooth, creamy consistency.
  5. Taste the matcha latte and add sugar to your preference, stirring until fully dissolved. The sugar should enhance the flavors without overpowering the matcha's natural taste. Adjust the sweetness gradually, tasting as you go to achieve the desired balance.
  6. Serve the matcha latte immediately in a traditional Japanese glass or cup. The latte should be enjoyed while it is warm, allowing the aromas and flavors to be fully appreciated. The presentation in traditional glassware adds to the authentic experience of this comforting beverage.
