Middle Eastern Fruit Drink

Middle Eastern Fruit Drink is a refreshing staple enjoyed across the region, often found at family gatherings and shared meals. This drink combines the tangy zest of lemons or oranges with the sweetness of sugar, creating a balance that is both invigorating and satisfying.

The drink should taste bright and citrusy, with a hint of sweetness that complements the natural tartness of the fruit. It's typically served chilled, making it a perfect choice for warm days or to accompany a variety of dishes at the table.

Ingredients

  • 4lemons or oranges
  • 100 gsugar
  • 1 Lwater
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Begin by selecting 4 fresh lemons or oranges. Roll each fruit firmly on the countertop with your palm to release the juices inside, making them easier to juice. Cut each fruit in half and use a juicer or your hands to extract the juice. Strain the juice through a fine mesh sieve into a large bowl to remove any seeds and pulp, ensuring a smooth drink.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 100 g of sugar with 1 L of water. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the sugar completely dissolves. You will know it's ready when the liquid becomes clear and no sugar granules are visible at the bottom.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the sugar water to cool slightly. Once cooled, pour the sugar water into the bowl containing the citrus juice. Stir gently to combine, taking care not to agitate the mixture too much, as this can cause the aromas to dissipate.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a large pitcher. Cover the pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator to chill for at least 2 hours. This chilling process allows the flavors to meld together, creating a harmonious balance that is characteristic of a traditional Middle Eastern Fruit Drink.
  5. Before serving, fill each glass with ice as needed. Pour the chilled fruit drink over the ice, filling each glass to the brim. The ice will help keep the drink refreshingly cold, enhancing the citrus flavors.
  6. Serve the drink immediately in traditional glassware, if available, to honor the cultural roots of this refreshing beverage. Enjoy the vibrant, sweet-tart flavors that are perfect for sharing with family and friends around the table.
