Middle Eastern Spiced Tea 2

Middle Eastern Spiced Tea 2 is a cherished staple in homes across the region, where it's brewed with a personal touch that reflects the cook's own taste. Often prepared in the late afternoon or early evening, it serves as a warm, comforting interlude in the day. This version is handed down through generations, capturing the essence of home cooking — a blend of tradition and personal flair.

Expect a fragrant brew with a balance of deep, earthy tea leaves and a symphony of spices that dance on the palate. The sweetness can be adjusted to your liking, making each cup a unique expression of the household's preference. Its warmth invites conversation and sharing, embodying the spirit of hospitality.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsptea leaves
  • 500 mlwater
  • to tastespices
  • to tastesugar

Method

  1. Start by bringing 500 ml of water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Use a saucepan with a lid to ensure the water heats evenly and retains its temperature. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of tea leaves to the simmering water. Stir gently with a spoon to ensure the leaves are fully submerged and begin to release their flavors. Allow the tea to steep for about 3 to 5 minutes, watching for the water to take on a rich, amber hue, which indicates that the tea has infused properly.
  3. While the tea is steeping, prepare your spices. Traditional choices might include a pinch of cardamom, a small piece of cinnamon stick, or a few cloves, but adjust to your taste. Add the spices directly to the simmering tea, stirring gently to combine. The aroma should become fragrant and inviting, signaling that the spices are blending well with the tea.
  4. Taste the tea and add sugar according to your preference. Start with a small amount, such as a teaspoon, and stir until fully dissolved. Taste again and adjust if necessary, ensuring the sweetness complements the spices without overpowering them.
  5. Once the tea has reached your desired flavor, remove the saucepan from the heat. Strain the tea through a fine mesh sieve into a teapot or directly into serving glasses to remove the tea leaves and spices. This ensures a smooth, clear tea without any sediment.
  6. Serve the tea immediately in traditional Middle Eastern glassware, such as small, clear tea glasses. The tea should be hot, aromatic, and inviting, perfect for sharing around the table. Enjoy the tea with family or guests, savoring the blend of spices and warmth.
