Middle Eastern Yogurt Drink

Middle Eastern Yogurt Drink, known for its refreshing and tangy taste, is a staple in many Middle Eastern homes. It's a simple blend of yogurt, cold water, and a touch of sea salt, often served chilled with ice to quench thirst in the warm climate.

This drink is a common sight at family gatherings and casual meals alike, embodying the essence of communal dining. The balance of creamy yogurt and a hint of salt creates a savory and satisfying beverage that complements a variety of dishes.

Ingredients

  • 400 gyogurt
  • 300 mlcold water
  • 1/2 tspfine sea salt
  • as neededice

Method

  1. Start by ensuring all your ingredients are chilled, as this will enhance the refreshing quality of the drink. Place the 400 g of yogurt in the refrigerator for at least an hour before you begin, or until it feels cold to the touch. This step is crucial to maintain the traditional cooling effect of the drink.
  2. Once the yogurt is chilled, measure 300 ml of cold water. Use a measuring jug to ensure accuracy, as the balance between yogurt and water is key to achieving the right consistency and flavor.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chilled yogurt and cold water. Use a whisk to gently stir the mixture, ensuring the yogurt is fully dissolved into the water. Whisk until the texture is smooth and there are no lumps, which indicates that the yogurt and water are well integrated.
  4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of fine sea salt to the yogurt mixture. Stir gently with the whisk until the salt is completely dissolved. Taste the drink to ensure the salt enhances the flavor without overpowering the yogurt's natural tanginess.
  5. Prepare your serving glasses by adding a few ice cubes to each. This will keep the drink cold and refreshing when served. The ice should be enough to chill the drink further without diluting it too much.
  6. Pour the yogurt drink into the prepared glasses, filling them to just below the rim. The drink should appear smooth and slightly frothy on top, a sign that it has been mixed well.
  7. Serve the Middle Eastern Yogurt Drink immediately, using traditional glassware if available. This enhances the authenticity and presentation, making it a delightful addition to any meal or a refreshing standalone beverage.
