American Griddle Bread 2

American Griddle Bread 2 is the kind of recipe that has found its way into kitchens across the country, each cook leaving their own mark on it. It’s a staple for busy weeknight dinners or leisurely weekend breakfasts, a versatile bread that can be made quickly on a griddle or skillet without the need for an oven. The simplicity of the ingredients—flour, water, oil, and salt—allows for endless adaptations, making it a cherished go-to for families looking to put something warm and satisfying on the table.

The result is a bread with a golden, crisp exterior and a soft, chewy interior. The generous use of fat gives it a rich flavor that pairs beautifully with both sweet and savory toppings. Whether served alongside a hearty stew or slathered with jam and butter, this griddle bread is all about comfort and familiarity. It's the kind of dish that invites you to tear off a piece, savor its simplicity, and share in its warmth.

Ingredients

  • 400 gflour
  • 200 mlwater
  • 1 tbspoil
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 400 g of flour and 1 tsp of fine sea salt. Gradually add 200 ml of water while stirring with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Add 1 tbsp of oil and mix until the dough comes together.
  2. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough by folding it over itself and pushing it away with the heel of your hand. Continue kneading for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. It should bounce back slightly when poked with a finger.
  3. Place the kneaded dough back into the bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free area until it has doubled in size. This should take about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the room temperature.
  4. Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release excess air. Divide the dough into equal portions, shaping each into a round ball. Flatten each ball slightly with your palm.
  5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a griddle or baking stone inside to heat up. Once the oven is ready, carefully place the dough rounds onto the hot griddle or stone. Bake for 10-15 minutes until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  6. Remove the bread from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack. Allow it to cool for at least 10 minutes so the crumb sets properly. This cooling step is crucial for achieving the right texture.
  7. Serve the griddle bread warm, slicing it just before serving to preserve its freshness. This bread pairs well with a variety of meals, making it a versatile addition to your table.
