Colombian Soft Rolls

In Colombian households, these soft rolls are a staple at any meal, their presence as common and comforting as the familiar sounds of a bustling kitchen. Whether served alongside a hearty stew or enjoyed as a simple accompaniment to breakfast, these rolls bring a touch of warmth and tradition to the table. The recipe reflects the intuitive nature of Colombian home cooking—where salt is measured by feel and butter is never spared.

These rolls, with their tender crumb and buttery aroma, melt in your mouth, offering a subtle balance of richness and lightness. Each bite feels like a soft embrace, making them an irresistible addition to any meal. Their simplicity is their charm, inviting you to reach for just one more, as they quietly make every gathering more inviting.

Ingredients

  • 500 gflour
  • 7 gyeast
  • 250 mlmilk
  • 50 gbutter
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 500 g of flour with 7 g of yeast and 1 tsp of fine sea salt. Use your fingers to mix these dry ingredients thoroughly, ensuring the yeast is evenly distributed throughout the flour. This will help the dough rise uniformly.
  2. In a small saucepan, gently heat 250 ml of milk and 50 g of butter over low heat until the butter has just melted. Do not let the milk boil; it should be warm to the touch, like a comfortable bath. This warmth will activate the yeast without killing it.
  3. Pour the warm milk and butter mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Using a wooden spoon, stir until a shaggy dough forms. Then, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky but not sticky.
  4. Place the kneaded dough back into the mixing bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free area until it doubles in size. This should take about an hour, and you'll know it's ready when you press a finger into the dough and the indentation remains.
  5. Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release excess air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball by tucking the edges underneath. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each roll for expansion.
  6. Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F). While the oven heats, cover the rolls with the kitchen towel again and let them rise for another 15 minutes. This second rise will give the rolls a light and fluffy texture.
  7. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown on top. You'll know they are done when they sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Remove the rolls from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool. This allows the crumb to set properly, ensuring a soft interior.
  9. Serve the Colombian Soft Rolls warm with your meal, enjoying the tender crumb and rich buttery flavor that complements any dish on the table.
