Japanese Soft Rolls 2

Japanese Soft Rolls 2 bring the comfort of a traditional Japanese home to your table, embodying the warmth of everyday meals shared with loved ones. Crafted with care, these rolls are a staple in family kitchens, where the balance of salt is judged by hand and butter is used generously. This recipe reflects the authentic approach of home cooks who prioritize flavor and texture over formal precision.

These rolls should emerge from the oven with a golden, tender crust, giving way to a pillowy, soft interior. The richness of butter melds seamlessly with the subtle saltiness, creating a flavor that's both simple and satisfying. Each bite offers a moment of cozy indulgence, perfect for sharing around a bustling family table.

Ingredients

  • 500 gflour
  • 7 gyeast
  • 250 mlmilk
  • 50 gbutter
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 500 g flour, 7 g yeast, and 1 tsp fine sea salt. Warm 250 ml milk gently in a small saucepan until it is just lukewarm to the touch, then add it to the dry ingredients. Melt 50 g butter and pour it into the mixture. Stir everything together until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Begin kneading by folding the dough over itself and pressing down with the heel of your hand. Continue kneading for about 10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. The dough should bounce back slightly when pressed with a finger.
  3. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Allow it to rise in a warm, draft-free area until it doubles in size. This should take about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the warmth of your kitchen.
  4. Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Transfer it back to the floured surface and divide it into equal portions, about the size of a small fist. Shape each portion into a smooth ball by tucking the edges underneath and rolling it gently between your hands.
  5. Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Arrange the shaped dough balls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each for expansion. Cover them with a damp cloth and let them rise again for about 30 minutes, until they are puffy and almost doubled in size.
  6. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. The aroma should be rich and buttery.
  7. Remove the rolls from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly. This helps set the crumb and prevents them from becoming soggy.
  8. Serve the Japanese Soft Rolls warm, allowing everyone at the table to enjoy their soft, fluffy texture. They pair beautifully with a variety of dishes, enhancing the meal with their subtle buttery flavor.
