American Nut Sweet

American Nut Sweet is a beloved treat that finds its roots in the heart of American home cooking. Once a staple at family gatherings, it's now enjoyed year-round, from cozy Sunday afternoons to festive holiday tables. This version captures the essence of a recipe handed down through generations, a dish that speaks to the resourcefulness and warmth of American kitchens.

With a rich, buttery base, this sweet treat offers a satisfying crunch from the nuts, harmonized with the caramel notes of sugar. The texture is both tender and crisp, a balance that invites you to savor each bite. It's a dessert that feels familiar, yet special, embodying the simplicity and comfort of home-cooked delights.

Ingredients

  • 200 gnuts — chopped
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 2eggs
  • 100 gflour

Method

  1. Begin by bringing 2 eggs and 100 g of butter to room temperature. This will ensure that they incorporate smoothly into the mixture, providing a consistent texture. Set them out on the counter for about 30 minutes before starting the recipe.
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the 100 g of butter. Once melted, add 150 g of sugar, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture becomes smooth and glossy. This should result in a golden syrup that coats the back of the spoon.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Crack the room-temperature eggs into a separate bowl and beat them lightly. Gradually add the eggs to the cooled butter and sugar mixture, stirring constantly to prevent the eggs from scrambling.
  4. Sift 100 g of flour into the saucepan, stirring gently to combine. The mixture should be thick and smooth, with no visible lumps of flour. This step ensures that the flour is evenly distributed, creating a uniform batter.
  5. Fold in 200 g of nuts using a spatula, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter. The nuts should be fully coated with the mixture, which will help them adhere during baking and provide a consistent nutty flavor in each bite.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish generously with butter to prevent sticking, then pour the nut mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula. The batter should be level across the dish to ensure even baking.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating that the dessert is fully cooked. This should result in a firm, yet slightly chewy texture that holds together well.
  8. Allow the American Nut Sweet to cool in the baking dish for at least 15 minutes before serving. This cooling period helps the dessert set, making it easier to cut into squares or slices. Serve warm or at room temperature, sharing with family and friends around the table.
