Caribbean Nut Sweet

Serves 4 to 6 Dessert vegetarian, Desserts

Caribbean Nut Sweet

Caribbean Nut Sweet is a beloved confection that graces tables across the islands, particularly during festive occasions when families gather to celebrate. This home-style version is crafted with the intuitive touch of Caribbean cooks, who know just how much salt to pinch and when the butter is just enough. These sweets embody the warmth of Caribbean hospitality, as they are shared generously among friends and family.

The result is a rich, buttery treat that marries the crunch of nuts with a sweet, caramelized finish. Each bite offers a delightful contrast between the crisp exterior and the tender interior, making it irresistible. Enjoy it as a standalone indulgence or pair it with a strong cup of Caribbean coffee to enhance its flavors.

Ingredients

  • 200 gnuts — chopped
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 2eggs
  • 100 gflour

Method

  1. Start by bringing the eggs and butter to room temperature. This ensures they blend smoothly into the mixture, creating a uniform texture. Leave them out on the counter for about 30 minutes before beginning the recipe.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt 100 g of butter over low heat. Once melted, add 150 g of sugar and stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture turns a light caramel color. This process should be done slowly to prevent the sugar from burning, which would result in a bitter taste.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Once cooled, whisk in the 2 room-temperature eggs one at a time. This gradual addition prevents the eggs from cooking too quickly and curdling in the warm mixture.
  4. Gradually sift in 100 g of flour, folding it gently into the mixture with a spatula. This helps to incorporate air, ensuring the final product is light and not dense. Continue folding until the flour is fully combined and the batter is smooth.
  5. Stir in 200 g of nuts, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter. The nuts add texture and a rich, nutty flavor that is characteristic of Caribbean Nut Sweet.
  6. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Pour the batter into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating the sweet is fully cooked.
  7. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. This allows the flavors to settle and makes it easier to cut. Serve warm, allowing the rich, buttery aroma to fill the room, enhancing the communal dining experience.
