Indonesian Fruit Compote 2

Indonesian Fruit Compote 2 is a beloved staple on home tables across the archipelago. Crafted with care, this dish reflects the Indonesian way of cooking where ingredients are measured by intuition and generosity. It is not confined to a specific occasion but rather enjoyed throughout the year, making appearances at both casual family meals and more festive gatherings. This recipe captures the essence of how an Indonesian family cook would lovingly prepare it.

The compote is a harmonious blend of seasonal fruits, gently sweetened and infused with the warmth of cinnamon. As it simmers, the fruits soften, releasing their natural juices into a syrupy delight. Each spoonful offers a comforting balance of sweetness and spice, with the cinnamon lending a subtle depth. Serve it warm or chilled, allowing its flavors to shine as a refreshing end to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 500 gseasonal fruit
  • 150 gsugar
  • 200 mlwater
  • 1 stickcinnamon

Method

  1. Start by preparing 500 g of seasonal fruit. Choose a variety of fruits such as mango, pineapple, or papaya, and peel and cut them into bite-sized pieces. This ensures the fruit cooks evenly and absorbs the syrup flavors well.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 150 g of sugar and 200 ml of water. Add 1 stick of cinnamon to the mixture. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely, creating a simple syrup.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, bring the syrup to a gentle simmer. Allow it to cook for a few minutes until the cinnamon stick releases its aroma, infusing the syrup with a warm, spicy scent.
  4. Add the prepared fruit pieces to the simmering syrup. Stir gently to coat the fruit evenly with the syrup. Continue to cook over medium heat until the fruit becomes tender but not mushy, ensuring it retains some of its texture.
  5. Once the fruit is tender, remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the compote to cool slightly, letting the flavors meld together. The syrup should be fragrant and slightly thickened, clinging lightly to the fruit pieces.
  6. Transfer the compote to a serving bowl. If desired, remove the cinnamon stick before serving. Serve the Indonesian Fruit Compote 2 warm or at room temperature, allowing the flavors to shine at their best.
