Indonesian Nut Sweet

Indonesian Nut Sweet

Indonesian Nut Sweet is a beloved treat enjoyed in homes across Indonesia, often served during family gatherings or special celebrations. This homemade version reflects the way Indonesian family cooks lovingly prepare it, with each ingredient carefully measured by feel and taste. The use of generous amounts of butter and a pinch of salt added by intuition rather than precision speaks to the heart of Indonesian home cooking.

Expect a delightful balance of rich, buttery flavors and the satisfying crunch of nuts, perfectly complemented by a hint of sweetness. The texture should be both tender and slightly crumbly, with each bite offering a comforting reminder of home. Serve it as a delightful finish to a meal or as a comforting snack to share with loved ones.

Ingredients

  • 200 gnuts — chopped
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 2eggs
  • 100 gflour

Method

  1. Begin by taking 100 g of butter and 2 eggs out of the refrigerator. Allow them to come to room temperature. This ensures that the butter will cream smoothly with the sugar, and the eggs will incorporate evenly into the mixture, preventing curdling.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the 100 g of butter over low heat. Once melted, add 150 g of sugar, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves completely. The mixture should become smooth and glossy, indicating that the sugar has fully integrated with the butter.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool slightly. Once it is warm but not hot, whisk in the 2 eggs one at a time. This gradual addition helps to prevent the eggs from cooking too quickly, ensuring a smooth and creamy mixture.
  4. Gradually sift 100 g of flour into the saucepan, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. The batter should be thick and smooth, with no visible streaks of flour.
  5. Fold in 200 g of nuts, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter. The nuts should be fully coated with the mixture, which will help them adhere and bake evenly.
  6. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula. The batter should be level, with nuts visible on the surface.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. This indicates that the mixture has set and the nuts are toasted, enhancing their flavor.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving. The Indonesian Nut Sweet is best enjoyed warm, allowing the flavors to meld and the texture to be at its most tender.
