Lebanese Nut Sweet

Lebanese Nut Sweet, a beloved treat in Lebanese households, is a staple of home cooking. Crafted with simplicity and love, it's a dish that finds its way onto tables during family gatherings and special occasions. Traditionally, it's a recipe passed down through generations, each family adding their unique touch. The generous use of butter and hand-measured salt reflect the Lebanese home cook's intuitive approach, resulting in a warm, inviting dish.

With its rich blend of buttery nuts and sweet sugar, the Lebanese Nut Sweet is a delightful balance of flavors and textures. The nuts provide a satisfying crunch, contrasting beautifully with the soft, tender crumb created by the eggs and flour. It's a dish that invites sharing, encouraging everyone to reach for a piece and enjoy the comforting taste of home.

Ingredients

  • 200 gnuts — chopped
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 2eggs
  • 100 gflour

Method

  1. Begin by taking the 100 g of butter out of the refrigerator and allowing it to come to room temperature. This will make it easier to cream with the sugar. Also, crack the 2 eggs into a small bowl and let them sit at room temperature. This helps them incorporate more smoothly into the batter.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, cream together the 150 g of sugar and the softened butter using a wooden spoon or an electric mixer on low speed. Mix until the mixture is light and fluffy, with no visible granules of sugar. This step is crucial for a smooth batter.
  3. Gradually add the room temperature eggs to the butter and sugar mixture, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. The mixture should become smooth and slightly thickened. If it starts to curdle, continue mixing until it comes back together.
  4. Sift 100 g of flour into the mixture and gently fold it in with a spatula. Be careful not to overmix; stop as soon as the flour is fully incorporated. The batter should be smooth and without lumps.
  5. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). While the oven is heating, prepare a baking dish by greasing it with a small amount of butter. This will prevent the sweet from sticking and ensure easy removal after baking.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the 200 g of nuts evenly over the top, pressing them gently into the batter. This ensures that the nuts adhere well and toast nicely during baking.
  7. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. This should take about 25-30 minutes, but rely on the color and texture rather than time alone.
  8. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. The Lebanese Nut Sweet is best enjoyed warm, allowing the flavors to meld and the texture to be perfectly tender.
