American Beef Skewers

American Beef Skewers

American Beef Skewers bring the essence of casual backyard gatherings to your table. This dish is a staple at American home tables, where beef cubes are seasoned with cumin, salt, and pepper, and then skewered for easy grilling. The simplicity of the ingredients highlights the quality of the beef, making it a favorite for both family dinners and friendly get-togethers.

Expect a robust, savory flavor with a hint of spice from the cumin, balanced by the sweetness of grilled onions. The generous use of fat ensures the beef remains juicy and tender, while the skewers make it perfect for sharing. This home-style version captures the essence of American cooking, where the focus is on straightforward, satisfying flavors.

Ingredients

  • 800 gbeef cubes
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 1 tspcumin
  • as neededskewers
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Start by placing the 800 g of beef cubes in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle 1 tsp of cumin, fine sea salt, and black pepper over the beef. Use your hands to mix and ensure each piece is evenly coated with the seasoning. This step infuses the beef with flavor, setting the foundation for the dish.
  2. Peel and slice the onion into thick rings. This will add flavor and moisture as the beef cooks. Thread the seasoned beef cubes onto skewers, alternating with onion slices. This not only adds flavor but also helps keep the beef juicy during cooking.
  3. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully add the skewers. Allow each side of the beef to brown deeply, turning occasionally. Look for a rich, caramelized color on the surface of the beef, which indicates the Maillard reaction is developing flavor.
  4. Once browned, you have two options: If using a grill, preheat it to medium-high and transfer the skewers to the grill. Cook until the beef is tender and cooked through, turning occasionally. If braising, reduce the skillet heat to low, cover, and let the skewers cook gently until tender. The beef should be firm yet yielding to the touch, with the onions softened and slightly charred.
  5. Remove the skewers from the heat and let them rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute within the beef, ensuring moist and flavorful bites. Taste a piece of beef for seasoning and adjust with more salt if needed.
  6. Serve the American Beef Skewers hot, alongside rice, bread, or a fresh salad. The skewers should be juicy and flavorful, with the onions providing a sweet and savory contrast. This dish is perfect for sharing, embodying the spirit of American home cooking.
