American Meatball Pot 3

American Meatball Pot 3 brings the comforting essence of American home cooking to your table. Crafted with hand-judged salt and a generous use of fat, this dish is a staple in many households across the country. It's a hearty, flavorful meal that showcases the simplicity and satisfaction of traditional American cuisine.

This version captures the authentic way families prepare it, using ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, and tomatoes. The flavors meld together, creating a savory pot of meatballs that is perfect for sharing. It's a dish that speaks to the heart of home cooking, where taste and togetherness go hand in hand.

Ingredients

  • 700 gground beef
  • 1onion
  • 1egg
  • 2 tbspbreadcrumbs
  • 2tomatoes
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Start by finely chopping 1 onion. In a large mixing bowl, combine 700 g ground beef, the chopped onion, 1 egg, 2 tbsp breadcrumbs, and a generous pinch of fine sea salt and black pepper. Mix the ingredients together with your hands until they are well combined, but be careful not to overmix as this can make the meatballs tough.
  2. Form the mixture into meatballs, each about the size of a golf ball. Aim for uniform size so they cook evenly. Set the meatballs aside on a plate.
  3. Heat a generous amount of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the meatballs in a single layer, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Cook the meatballs until they are deeply browned on all sides, turning them gently with tongs. This should create a nice crust on the outside.
  4. While the meatballs are browning, dice 2 tomatoes. Once the meatballs are browned, remove them from the skillet and set them aside on a clean plate.
  5. In the same skillet, add the diced tomatoes. Stir them around to pick up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan, which will add flavor to the dish. Cook the tomatoes until they start to break down and release their juices, creating a sauce.
  6. Return the browned meatballs to the skillet with the tomato sauce. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the meatballs braise in the sauce. Cook until the meatballs are tender and fully cooked through, with the sauce thickened slightly. The meatballs should feel firm to the touch and the sauce should have a rich, savory aroma.
  7. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more fine sea salt and black pepper if needed. Serve the meatballs hot, accompanied by rice, bread, or salad for a complete meal.
