Caribbean Beef Skewers 3

Caribbean Beef Skewers 3 captures the essence of home cooking in the Caribbean, where beef cubes are marinated with a simple yet flavorful mix of onion, cumin, and a generous hand of salt. This dish finds its place at the center of family meals, particularly on weekends when time slows down, and the focus shifts to shared moments and hearty bites. It's a recipe passed between generations, each cook adding their own touch.

Expect tender beef, deeply imbued with the warmth of cumin, complemented by the subtle sweetness of onion. The skewers, grilled to juicy perfection, invite diners to reach across the table, forging connections over each savory mouthful. A true testament to the communal spirit, these skewers are best enjoyed in good company, with hands reaching for seconds.

Ingredients

  • 800 gbeef cubes
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 1 tspcumin
  • as neededskewers
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Start by placing the 800 g of beef cubes in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle 1 tsp of cumin evenly over the meat, then add fine sea salt and black pepper to taste. Use your hands to mix, ensuring each piece of beef is well-coated with the spices. This step infuses the beef with flavor and sets the foundation for the dish.
  2. Peel and finely chop 1 onion. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and fragrant, about 3 to 4 minutes. This will add a sweet and savory base to the beef.
  3. Add the seasoned beef cubes to the skillet with the onions. Spread them out in a single layer to ensure even browning. Let the beef sear on one side without moving it for about 5 minutes, or until a deep brown crust forms. Turn the cubes to brown all sides, ensuring the meat is caramelized and flavorful.
  4. If using skewers, thread the browned beef cubes onto them, leaving a little space between each piece to allow even cooking. If you prefer, you can also leave the beef in the skillet for the next step.
  5. For grilling, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place the skewers on the grill and cook, turning occasionally, until the beef is tender and cooked to your liking, about 8 to 10 minutes. If braising, reduce the skillet heat to low, cover, and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, until the beef is tender and juicy.
  6. Once the beef is cooked, taste a piece and adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed. The beef should be flavorful, with a hint of spice from the cumin and a savory depth from the onions.
  7. Serve the Caribbean Beef Skewers with your choice of rice, bread, or a fresh salad. The dish is meant to be shared, embodying the communal spirit of Caribbean home cooking.
