Caribbean Shrimp Pan is a beloved staple across the islands, lovingly prepared in homes where the sea breeze merges with the aromas of garlic and chili. It's a dish that graces the table on any day that calls for a quick but satisfying meal, capturing the essence of Caribbean home cooking with its straightforward yet generous approach. The shrimp are the stars here, gleaming like jewels in a pan that brings the family together without ceremony.

The dish bursts with the brightness of lemon and the warmth of chili, creating a balance of flavors that is both comforting and exhilarating. Each bite offers a tender, succulent experience, with the shrimp soaking up the rich olive oil and aromatic garlic. It's a dish meant to be shared, the bowl passed around the table, each person adding a pinch more salt or a squeeze of lemon to their liking, embodying the casual elegance of Caribbean home dining.

Ingredients

  • 600 gshrimp
  • 4 clovesgarlic
  • 80 mlolive oil
  • lemonjuiced
  • to tastechili
  • to tastefine sea salt

Method

  1. Start by cleaning the shrimp. Peel and devein 600 g of shrimp, ensuring all shells and veins are removed. Rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This step ensures the shrimp are clean and ready to absorb the flavors of the dish.
  2. In a large skillet, pour 80 ml of olive oil and set the heat to medium. While the oil is warming, finely chop 4 cloves of garlic. Add the chopped garlic to the oil, stirring gently. Cook until the garlic becomes fragrant and starts to turn a light golden color, which indicates the oil is infused with its aroma.
  3. Add the cleaned shrimp to the skillet in a single layer, ensuring each piece makes contact with the pan. Increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the shrimp for about 2-3 minutes on one side until they start to turn pink and opaque around the edges.
  4. Flip the shrimp over to the other side using tongs or a spatula. Continue cooking for another 1-2 minutes. The shrimp are done when they are fully opaque and have a firm texture. Be careful not to overcook, as they will become rubbery.
  5. Squeeze the juice of one lemon over the shrimp, allowing the citrus to enhance the flavors. Add chili to taste for a hint of heat, and sprinkle fine sea salt to your preference. Stir everything gently to ensure the shrimp are evenly coated with the lemon juice and seasonings.
  6. Taste a piece of shrimp to check for seasoning balance. Adjust the salt and chili if needed, keeping in mind the dish should have a bright, zesty flavor with a touch of heat. Serve the Caribbean Shrimp Pan immediately, inviting everyone to enjoy the vibrant and aromatic dish together.
