Japanese Beef Skewers 3

Japanese Beef Skewers 3 brings the essence of Japanese home cooking to your table. This dish is a staple at family gatherings, where the generous use of beef and the simplicity of preparation allow for a shared experience that truly embodies the warmth of a Japanese household. Hand-judged salt and a liberal use of fat highlight the casual yet attentive approach of home cooks, ensuring each skewer is a true reflection of domestic culinary practice.

The skewers offer a balance of rich, savory beef complemented by the gentle sweetness of onion, all elevated by a hint of cumin. The fine sea salt and pepper provide a subtle seasoning that enhances rather than overpowers. The result is a mouthwatering combination of flavors and textures, perfect for enjoying with friends and family around the table.

Ingredients

  • 800 gbeef cubes
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 1 tspcumin
  • as neededskewers
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by cutting the 800 g of beef cubes into uniform pieces, about 2.5 cm each, to ensure even cooking. Place the beef cubes in a large bowl and season them generously with fine sea salt and black pepper. Add 1 tsp of cumin and mix well, ensuring each piece is evenly coated with the spices.
  2. Peel and slice the onion into thick wedges, about 2 cm wide. Thread the beef cubes and onion wedges alternately onto the skewers, leaving a small space between each piece to allow heat to circulate.
  3. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, place the skewers in the skillet, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Cook the skewers, turning occasionally, until each piece of beef is deeply browned on all sides. Look for a rich, caramelized crust to develop on the beef.
  4. If using a grill, preheat it to medium-high heat. Place the skewers on the grill and cook, turning occasionally, until the beef is tender and cooked to your desired level of doneness. The beef should feel firm yet springy to the touch, with juices running clear.
  5. Once the beef is cooked to your liking, remove the skewers from the heat. Taste a piece of beef and adjust the seasoning with additional salt if necessary. Serve the skewers immediately, accompanied by rice, bread, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
