Pakistani Beef Pot 2

Serves 4 to 6 Entree meat

Pakistani Beef Pot 2

Pakistani Beef Pot 2 is a dish deeply rooted in the culinary traditions of Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Islamabad. It's an everyday meal found on tables across these cities, crafted with a generous hand for fat and a natural instinct for seasoning. This version comes directly from the kitchens of Pakistani homes, capturing the essence of how families truly prepare and enjoy it.

Expect a robust and hearty flavor, where tender beef cubes meld smoothly with the soft sweetness of carrots and the aromatic depth of onions. The dish is subtly seasoned with fine sea salt and black pepper, allowing the natural flavors to shine. It's a comforting pot meant for sharing, bringing warmth and satisfaction to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 800 gbeef cubes
  • 2carrots
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 500 mlwater
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by seasoning 800 g of beef cubes with fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Use your hands to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed over each piece of meat. This step helps to enhance the natural flavors of the beef.
  2. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat 2 tbsp of oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, add the seasoned beef cubes in a single layer. Allow them to brown deeply on all sides, turning occasionally. The goal is to achieve a rich, dark crust on the beef, which will add depth to the dish's flavor.
  3. While the beef is browning, peel and slice 2 carrots and 1 onion. Once the beef is browned, remove it from the pot and set aside. Add the sliced onions to the same pot, using the residual heat and oil to soften them. Stir occasionally until the onions become translucent and begin to caramelize, releasing a sweet aroma.
  4. Add the sliced carrots to the pot with the onions, stirring them together. Cook for a few minutes until the carrots start to soften slightly. This step allows the vegetables to absorb the flavors from the pot, creating a harmonious base for the dish.
  5. Return the browned beef cubes to the pot, nestling them among the vegetables. Pour in 500 ml of water, ensuring the beef is mostly submerged. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot with a lid and let it braise slowly, checking occasionally. The beef is ready when it is tender and easily pierced with a fork, and the liquid has reduced to a flavorful sauce.
  6. Once the beef is tender, taste the dish and adjust the seasoning with more salt and black pepper if needed. The flavors should be well-balanced, with the beef and vegetables harmonizing beautifully. Serve the Pakistani Beef Pot 2 hot, accompanied by rice, bread, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
