Vietnamese Beef Skewers 2

Vietnamese Beef Skewers 2 brings the essence of home-cooked Vietnamese meals straight to your table. This dish is a staple in many Vietnamese households, where it's prepared with generous use of fat and seasoning judged by hand. It’s the kind of food that finds its place at family meals, where sharing is not just a practice but a way of life. The skewers are perfect for any casual gathering, making an ordinary day feel special.

Each bite offers a tender and juicy morsel of beef, kissed by the warmth of cumin and balanced with the subtle sweetness of onion. The seasoning, carefully adjusted by taste, allows the natural flavors of the beef to shine through. This dish, with its straightforward preparation and deep flavors, invites you to savor the simplicity and authenticity of Vietnamese home cooking.

Ingredients

  • 800 gbeef cubes
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 1 tspcumin
  • as neededskewers
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by placing the 800 g beef cubes in a large mixing bowl. Season them generously with fine sea salt, black pepper, and 1 tsp cumin, ensuring each piece is evenly coated. Toss the beef cubes with your hands to distribute the seasoning thoroughly.
  2. Peel and finely chop 1 onion. In a large skillet, heat 2 tbsp oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the seasoned beef cubes to the skillet in a single layer, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Allow them to brown on one side without moving them, which should take about 3-4 minutes. The beef should develop a deep, rich color before you turn them.
  4. Turn the beef cubes to brown the other sides, again allowing them to sit undisturbed for a few minutes. The goal is to achieve a uniform, deep brown crust on all sides, which enhances the flavor and texture.
  5. Once the beef is browned, you can choose to either braise or grill the skewers. For braising, add a small amount of water or broth to the skillet, cover, and reduce the heat to low. Cook until the beef is tender, checking occasionally and adding more liquid if necessary.
  6. Alternatively, if grilling, thread the browned beef cubes onto skewers and place them on a preheated grill. Cook, turning occasionally, until the beef is tender and cooked through, with a slight char on the edges.
  7. Taste a piece of beef for saltiness and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve the Vietnamese Beef Skewers 2 with rice, bread, or salad, encouraging sharing at the table, as is traditional in Vietnamese home cooking.
