Vietnamese Beef Skewers 3

Vietnamese Beef Skewers 3 brings the warmth of home-cooked meals to the table, embodying the essence of a Vietnamese family gathering. This dish, often prepared for casual weekend lunches or informal family dinners, reflects a tradition where food is meant to be shared and savored in good company. The recipe captures the simplicity and heart of Vietnamese home cooking, where intuition guides the hand in seasoning and preparation.

The skewers boast a robust flavor profile, where the earthy depth of cumin mingles with the natural richness of beef, harmonized by a subtle onion sweetness. Generous use of fat ensures each bite is juicy and tender, while a final touch of sea salt and black pepper allows the flavors to shine. This dish is best enjoyed directly from the grill, passed around the table, bringing smiles with each mouthful.

Ingredients

  • 800 gbeef cubes
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 1 tspcumin
  • as neededskewers
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by seasoning 800 g of beef cubes with 1 tsp of cumin, fine sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Toss the cubes thoroughly to ensure each piece is evenly coated with the spices. This step infuses the beef with flavor and helps form a crust during cooking.
  2. Peel and finely slice 1 onion. In a large skillet or grill pan, heat 2 tbsp of oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the onion slices and sauté until they become translucent and slightly caramelized, which should take about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the seasoned beef cubes to the pan with the onions. Spread them out in a single layer to ensure even browning. Allow the beef to brown on all sides, turning occasionally with tongs. Look for a deep, rich color on the surface of the beef, which indicates the development of flavor.
  4. Once the beef is browned, you have the option to either braise or grill the skewers. For braising, add a small amount of water to the pan, cover, and reduce the heat to low. Cook until the beef is tender, checking occasionally to ensure there is enough liquid to prevent sticking. Alternatively, if grilling, thread the beef onto skewers and grill over medium heat, turning frequently until cooked through and tender.
  5. Taste a piece of beef for seasoning and adjust with more salt if necessary. The beef should be tender and flavorful, with the spices and salt enhancing its natural taste. Serve the skewers with rice, bread, or a fresh salad, inviting everyone to share and enjoy the meal together.
