Colombian Sweet Syrup Cake

Colombian Sweet Syrup Cake is a cherished delight at home tables across the region, where cooks often rely on their intuition to balance flavors and textures. This cake finds its place on the table during family gatherings and casual afternoons, when a sweet, comforting bite is needed to accompany conversations and laughter. Its roots lie in the everyday kitchens where tradition meets the personal touch of each cook.

The cake brings together the richness of butter and the sweetness of sugar, creating a moist crumb that is further elevated by a generous soaking in syrup. The result is a tender, melt-in-your-mouth experience that leaves a lingering sweetness. It's a cake that speaks to the heart of Colombian home cooking, celebrating the simplicity and warmth of shared moments.

Ingredients

  • 200 gflour
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 3eggs
  • syrupto soak

Method

  1. Begin by bringing 100 g of butter to room temperature. This will make it easier to cream with the sugar, ensuring a smooth batter. At the same time, take 3 eggs out of the refrigerator to bring them to room temperature, which helps them incorporate better into the batter.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and 150 g of sugar. Use a wooden spoon or an electric mixer to beat them until the mixture is light and fluffy, with no visible grains of sugar. This process is crucial for creating a tender cake texture.
  3. Add the 3 room-temperature eggs to the creamed butter and sugar, one at a time. Beat well after each addition until the eggs are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth. This gradual addition helps maintain the emulsion, preventing the batter from curdling.
  4. Sift 200 g of flour into the wet ingredients, folding it in gently with a spatula. Use a folding motion to combine the flour without deflating the batter, which keeps the cake light and airy. Ensure there are no pockets of flour remaining.
  5. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a round cake pan generously with butter, ensuring the entire surface is covered to prevent sticking. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  6. Bake the cake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. This should take about 25-30 minutes, but rely on the color and toothpick test rather than time alone for doneness.
  7. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool slightly in the pan for about 10 minutes. This resting time helps the cake set and makes it easier to handle.
  8. Carefully transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, generously drizzle your chosen syrup over the top, allowing it to soak into the cake. Serve the cake at room temperature, ensuring each slice is moist and infused with the sweet syrup.
