Pakistani Sweet Syrup Cake 2

Pakistani Sweet Syrup Cake 2 is a beloved dessert often found on tables in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Islamabad. This home-style version captures the essence of family gatherings, where cooks use a generous hand with salt and fat, creating a rich and inviting cake meant for sharing.

The cake is a delightful blend of flour, sugar, butter, and eggs, soaked in a sweet syrup that permeates each bite. The result is a moist, flavorful treat that reflects the warmth and hospitality of Pakistani family cooking.

Ingredients

  • 200 gflour
  • 150 gsugar
  • 100 gbutter
  • 3eggs
  • syrupto soak

Method

  1. Begin by taking 100 g of butter out of the refrigerator and allowing it to come to room temperature. This ensures that the butter is soft enough to cream easily with the sugar, which is crucial for creating a light and airy cake texture. At the same time, bring 3 eggs to room temperature by leaving them out on the counter. This helps them incorporate more smoothly into the batter.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and 150 g of sugar using a wooden spoon or an electric mixer on medium speed. Continue mixing until the mixture is pale and fluffy, which indicates that the sugar has dissolved into the butter, creating a smooth base for the cake.
  3. Add the room temperature eggs to the butter-sugar mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition. This gradual incorporation helps maintain the emulsion and prevents the mixture from curdling. The batter should be smooth and slightly thick after all eggs have been added.
  4. Sift 200 g of flour into the wet mixture gradually, folding it in gently with a spatula. This helps to avoid over-mixing, which can result in a dense cake. The batter should be smooth and free of lumps, with a consistency that falls off the spatula in thick ribbons.
  5. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking pan generously with butter to prevent sticking. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven until the cake is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating that the cake is fully cooked.
  6. While the cake is baking, prepare the syrup. If you have a pre-made syrup, ensure it is at room temperature. If not, you can make a simple syrup by dissolving equal parts sugar and water over low heat until clear and slightly thickened. This syrup will soak into the cake, adding moisture and sweetness.
  7. Once the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. This slight cooling period allows the cake to firm up a bit, making it easier to handle. Then, poke holes all over the surface of the cake using a skewer or fork.
  8. Pour the syrup evenly over the cake, allowing it to soak in completely. The cake should absorb the syrup readily, becoming moist and flavorful. Let the cake cool completely before serving, as this will ensure the syrup is fully absorbed and the cake is at its best texture for slicing and sharing.
