American Rice Side 2

American Rice Side 2 is a staple for weeknight dinners across the country, embodying the straightforward approach of American home cooking. With just a few ingredients, it’s the kind of dish that appears on tables set for sharing, where the measure of salt is left to personal taste and the butter is used without restraint. This recipe captures the essence of home-cooked simplicity, written as it’s actually prepared in American kitchens.

Expect a comforting texture, where each grain of rice is tender but distinct, enriched by the gentle embrace of butter or oil. The subtle seasoning of fine sea salt enhances the natural flavor of the rice, making it a versatile side that complements a wide array of main dishes. It's a humble yet essential addition to any family meal, inviting you to savor both the dish and the moment.

Ingredients

  • 400 grice
  • 50 gbutter or oil
  • 600 mlwater
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by preparing your vegetables. Choose vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, and celery, and dice them into small, even pieces. This ensures they cook evenly and blend well with the rice.
  2. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet, melt 50 g of butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes translucent and soft. This should take about 3 to 5 minutes, and the onion should not brown.
  3. Add the prepared vegetables to the pot with the onions. Stir them well to coat with the butter. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender. They should be softened but still have a slight bite, indicating they are ready for the next step.
  4. Add 400 g of rice to the pot, stirring to ensure each grain is coated with the butter and vegetable mixture. This step helps toasting the rice slightly, enhancing its flavor.
  5. Pour in 600 ml of water and add 1 tsp of fine sea salt. Stir the mixture once to combine, then increase the heat to bring it to a gentle boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer. Cook until the rice has absorbed all the water and is tender, which you can tell by tasting a few grains. They should be soft with no hard center.
  7. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for about 5 minutes. This resting time allows the rice to finish cooking in its own steam and become fluffy.
  8. Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains. Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt if needed. Serve the American Rice Side 2 warm, ready to accompany your main dish.
