Japanese Rice Side 2

Japanese Rice Side 2 is a comforting fixture in everyday Japanese home meals. This dish is prepared with a focus on simplicity and flavor, often gracing the table during casual family dinners. It reflects the home cook’s touch, with salt measured by feel and a generous hand with butter or oil, showcasing a balance between tradition and personal taste.

The result is a bowl of rice that is both rich and satisfying, with each grain carrying the subtle depth of butter and a gentle salinity. The rice should feel tender yet distinct, a harmonious companion to a variety of main dishes, offering warmth and a sense of home with every bite.

Ingredients

  • 400 grice
  • 50 gbutter or oil
  • 600 mlwater
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Rinse 400 g of rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps the rice cook to a fluffy texture.
  2. Cut your vegetables evenly, ensuring they are all roughly the same size. This ensures that they cook evenly and at the same rate, preventing any pieces from being undercooked or overcooked.
  3. In a medium-sized pot, melt 50 g of butter or heat the same amount of oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and soft, which should take about 5 minutes. This step develops a sweet, aromatic base for the dish.
  4. Add the rinsed rice to the pot, stirring to coat each grain with the butter or oil. This step helps to lightly toast the rice, enhancing its flavor and preventing it from becoming too sticky.
  5. Pour in 600 ml of water and add 1 tsp of fine sea salt. Stir gently to combine, then increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer. Cook until the rice is tender and has absorbed all the water, which you can tell when the surface shows small steam holes and the rice is soft to the bite.
  7. Remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for about 10 minutes. This resting period allows the rice to finish cooking through steam, resulting in a perfect texture.
  8. Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains. Serve warm, seasoned with additional salt if needed, and enjoy the comforting flavors of this Japanese Rice Side 2.
