American Beef Broth Soup

American Beef Broth Soup finds its roots in the comforting kitchens of home cooks across the United States. This dish is often prepared during cooler months when the desire for hearty, warming meals takes center stage. Generations have passed down their own versions, each family adding a unique touch, but the essence remains—a simple, nourishing soup that's easy to share.

The flavor profile is rich and savory, with tender beef shank imparting depth to every spoonful. The sweetness of carrots and the gentle bite of onion meld seamlessly into the broth, enhanced by a touch of fine sea salt and black pepper. This soup embodies the warmth of a home-cooked meal, served with generosity and a sense of togetherness.

Ingredients

  • 600 gbeef shank — cubed
  • 1onion
  • 2carrots
  • 1.8 Lbeef broth
  • 2 tbspoil
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by preparing your ingredients. Peel and chop 1 onion into medium-sized pieces. Peel and slice 2 carrots into rounds about 1/4 inch thick. This will ensure they cook evenly and release their sweetness into the broth.
  2. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the chopped onion. Stir occasionally, cooking until the onion becomes translucent and soft, about 5 minutes. This step builds a fragrant base for the soup, enhancing its overall flavor.
  3. Add the sliced carrots to the pot with the onions. Stir them together and continue to cook for another 3 minutes. The carrots should start to soften slightly, releasing their natural sugars and adding depth to the broth.
  4. Place 600 g of beef shank into the pot, nestling it among the vegetables. Pour in 1.8 L of beef broth, ensuring the meat is fully submerged. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer.
  5. Allow the soup to simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender. You'll know it's ready when the meat easily pulls apart with a fork and the broth has a rich, beefy aroma. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking.
  6. Once the beef is tender, taste the broth and season with fine sea salt and black pepper to your liking. Remember, the salt should enhance the flavors without overpowering them.
  7. Serve the American Beef Broth Soup hot, ensuring each bowl has a generous portion of beef and vegetables. This dish is perfect for sharing, embodying the comforting and hearty nature of American home cooking.
