American Lentil Pot

American Lentil Pot is a comforting staple in many American households, adapted over time to bring warmth to the dinner table during cooler months. This version embodies the casual, homey approach that many American family cooks take, where ingredients are measured by feel and instinct rather than strict guidelines. It's a dish that invites everyone to gather around, offering simple yet satisfying nourishment.

The pot delivers a hearty blend of tender red lentils, softened onions, and fragrant cumin, all simmered to create a soothing, earthy base. A squeeze of bright lemon at the end adds a fresh, tangy lift, balancing the richness of olive oil and garlic. Seasoned with just the right touch of sea salt and black pepper, it’s a bowl that comforts and satisfies with every spoonful.

Ingredients

  • 300 gred lentils
  • 1onion — chopped
  • 2 clovesgarlic
  • 1 tspcumin
  • 1.5 Lwater
  • 1 tbspolive oil
  • 1lemon — juiced
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Start by finely chopping 1 onion and mincing 2 cloves of garlic. In a large pot, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the onion and garlic. Stir occasionally, cooking until the onion becomes translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to let them brown, as this could impart a bitter taste to the dish.
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin to the pot, stirring it into the softened onions and garlic. Allow the cumin to toast for about a minute, which will release its aroma and deepen its flavor. This step is crucial for building the fragrant base of your American Lentil Pot.
  3. Measure out 300 g of red lentils and rinse them under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes any dust or debris. Add the rinsed lentils to the pot, stirring them to coat with the aromatic mixture.
  4. Pour in 1.5 liters of water, stirring to combine with the lentils and aromatics. Increase the heat to high until the mixture begins to boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer gently. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, and continue simmering until the lentils are tender and have absorbed most of the liquid, resulting in a creamy texture.
  5. Once the lentils are cooked to your desired tenderness, taste the dish and season with fine sea salt and black pepper to your liking. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice of one half into the pot, stirring to incorporate. This will brighten the flavors and add a fresh finish to the dish.
  6. Serve the American Lentil Pot warm, garnished with a drizzle of olive oil if desired. This dish is perfect for sharing, embodying the communal spirit of American home cooking.
