Indonesian Lentil Pot 3

Indonesian Lentil Pot 3 finds its way to the table as a comforting staple of home cooking, embodying the everyday warmth of Indonesian family meals. It's a dish that celebrates simplicity and is often prepared with ingredients easily found in any kitchen. The lentils are cooked with a careful hand, the seasoning adjusted intuitively, much like the way generations of Indonesian home cooks have done before.

Expect a bowl brimming with tender red lentils, gently flavored with the earthiness of cumin and the brightness of lemon. The olive oil adds a smooth richness, while the onion and garlic provide depth. This dish is best enjoyed when served immediately, allowing its delicate balance of flavors to shine through each warm spoonful.

Ingredients

  • 300 gred lentils
  • 1onion — chopped
  • 2 clovesgarlic
  • 1 tspcumin
  • 1.5 Lwater
  • 1 tbspolive oil
  • 1lemon — juiced
  • to tastefine sea salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Begin by finely chopping 1 onion and mincing 2 cloves of garlic. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot. Stir frequently, cooking until the onion becomes translucent and the garlic is fragrant, taking care not to let them brown.
  2. Rinse 300 g of red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. Add the rinsed lentils to the pot with the softened onion and garlic. Stir in 1 teaspoon of cumin, allowing the spice to coat the lentils and release its aroma, enhancing the base flavor.
  3. Pour 1.5 liters of water into the pot, stirring to combine with the lentils and aromatics. Increase the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer gently.
  4. Simmer the lentils, stirring occasionally, until they are tender and have absorbed most of the liquid. The lentils should be soft and creamy, with a slightly thickened consistency. This process will take some time, so be patient and allow the flavors to meld together.
  5. Once the lentils have reached the desired texture, taste the dish and season with fine sea salt and black pepper to your liking. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the pot, stirring well to incorporate the citrus brightness.
  6. Finish the dish by drizzling a thread of olive oil over the top before serving. This adds a rich, smooth finish to the lentils. Serve the Indonesian Lentil Pot 3 warm, ideally with rice or bread, and enjoy the comforting flavors that are perfect for sharing.
