American Chili Salt

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

American Chili Salt

American Chili Salt is a versatile pantry staple that finds its roots in the diverse culinary landscape of the United States. It's a blend that brings together the fiery kick of chili flakes with the earthy warmth of cumin, often reaching for a place on the table during barbecues, game days, and casual dinners where a hint of spice can elevate the meal.

The blend is a harmonious mix of spicy, salty, and savory notes. The chili flakes provide a robust heat that is balanced by the fine sea salt, while the garlic powder adds a subtle depth. The cumin offers an aromatic finish that lingers pleasantly on the palate. Use it to season roasted vegetables, sprinkle over popcorn, or as a finishing touch on grilled meats.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. Place a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes and 1 teaspoon of cumin to the skillet. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon for about 2-3 minutes, until they release a warm, spicy aroma and the chili flakes slightly darken in color, indicating they've been toasted.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and immediately transfer the toasted spices to a plate to cool completely. This prevents them from continuing to cook and potentially burning in the residual heat of the pan.
  3. Once the spices have cooled, combine them in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Add 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder to the mixture. Grind or mix the ingredients until they are evenly combined and the texture is consistent throughout.
  4. Transfer the American Chili Salt to an airtight container. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed to maintain the blend's freshness and potency.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. This helps preserve the aroma and flavor of the spices.
  6. For the best aroma and flavor, use the American Chili Salt within a few months. Sprinkle it over grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or popcorn for a spicy, savory kick.
