American House Rub

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

American House Rub

American House Rub is a versatile pantry staple that captures the essence of an American kitchen with its bold and balanced flavors. This blend is often used to season meats, fish, and vegetables, adding a depth of flavor appreciated at any barbecue or family dinner. It reflects the American penchant for quick yet flavorful seasoning, making it a go-to choice for weekday meals and weekend gatherings alike.

The rub boasts a warm, earthy profile with the smoky undertones of paprika and the aromatic punch of cumin. Coriander lends a citrusy brightness, while black pepper adds a subtle heat, all rounded out by a touch of sea salt. This mix elevates grilled or roasted dishes, offering a harmonious blend that enhances rather than overpowers the main ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspground cumin
  • 2 tbsppaprika
  • 1 tbspground coriander
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tbspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of ground cumin, 2 tablespoons of paprika, 1 tablespoon of ground coriander, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper to the skillet. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know they're ready when the aroma becomes rich and the spices slightly darken in color, usually within a few minutes.
  2. Once the spices are toasted, remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the spices to a plate to cool completely. This step is crucial to prevent any residual heat from continuing to cook the spices, which could lead to bitterness.
  3. After the spices have cooled, combine them with 1 tablespoon of fine sea salt in a small bowl. Use a spoon or a small whisk to mix them thoroughly, ensuring an even distribution of all the spices. If you prefer a finer texture, you can use a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle to grind the blend to your desired consistency.
  4. Transfer the blended spices into an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. This will help preserve the freshness and potency of the spices.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat. This will help maintain the rub's aroma and flavor.
  6. For optimal flavor, use the American House Rub within a few months. Over time, the spices may lose some of their potency, so it's best to make a fresh batch regularly.
