American Warm Spice Blend 2

American Warm Spice Blend 2 is a pantry staple that adds a cozy, aromatic touch to a variety of dishes, making it a favorite for autumn and winter cooking. This blend draws inspiration from traditional American baking spices, often used to evoke the warmth of holiday gatherings and the comfort of home-cooked meals. Ideal for sprinkling into morning oatmeal or enhancing the depth of a roasted squash, this blend is versatile enough to find a place in both sweet and savory dishes.

The combination of cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves creates a fragrant bouquet, while black pepper and sea salt add a subtle kick, balancing the sweetness with a hint of savory depth. Sprinkle it over roasted nuts, mix it into cookie dough, or add a dash into your favorite chili recipe for a warming twist. The blend’s flavor should feel like a gentle hug—familiar yet with a little extra spice to keep things interesting.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbspcinnamon
  • 1 tbspcardamom
  • 1 tspcloves
  • 1 tspblack pepper
  • 1 tspfine sea salt

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat. Add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cardamom, 1 teaspoon of cloves, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper to the skillet. Stir the spices gently with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. Continue stirring until the spices release a warm, fragrant aroma, which should take a few minutes. Be careful not to let the spices burn, as this will impart a bitter taste.
  2. Once the spices are toasted and aromatic, remove the skillet from the heat and allow the spices to cool completely. This cooling step is crucial as it prevents the spices from clumping together when ground or combined.
  3. After the spices have cooled, transfer them to a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle. If using a grinder, pulse until the spices are finely ground and well combined. If using a mortar and pestle, grind the spices in a circular motion until they are evenly mixed and finely textured.
  4. Once ground, transfer the spice blend to an airtight container. Ensure the container is clean and dry to prevent any moisture from affecting the blend's quality.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight. This will help preserve the spice blend's aroma and flavor.
  6. For the best aroma and flavor, use the American Warm Spice Blend 2 within a few months. This ensures that the spices remain potent and enhance your dishes with their warm, inviting notes.
