Barbecue Rub

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Barbecue Rub

Barbecue rubs have long been the cornerstone of American grilling, a flavorful blend that transforms humble cuts into backyard masterpieces. This dry seasoning is your ticket to infusing brisket and ribs with the deep, smoky essence that defines Southern barbecue. A staple at summer cookouts and neighborhood gatherings, the rub's origins lie in the tradition of slow-cooked meats, where patience and the right spice mix are key.

What sets this rub apart is its harmonious balance of sweet, smoky, and savory notes. The paprika lends a gentle smokiness, while brown sugar caramelizes to a perfect crust. Garlic and onion powders bring depth, and sea salt ties everything together with a touch of black pepper for a subtle kick. Rub it generously onto meat before grilling or smoking, and let the flavors work their magic.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsppaprika
  • 2 tbspbrown sugar
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tbsponion powder
  • 1 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tspblack pepper

Method

  1. Begin by gathering a small, dry skillet. Place it over medium heat and add 2 tbsp paprika, 1 tbsp garlic powder, and 1 tbsp onion powder. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon to prevent burning. Toast them until they release a warm, fragrant aroma, which should take about 2 to 3 minutes. This step enhances the flavors by releasing the essential oils in the spices.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the toasted spices to cool completely in the pan. This cooling step is crucial to ensure the spices do not clump together when mixed with the other ingredients.
  3. Once cooled, transfer the toasted spices to a small mixing bowl. Add 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tbsp fine sea salt, and 1 tsp black pepper to the bowl. Use a whisk or a fork to combine all the ingredients thoroughly, ensuring an even distribution of flavors throughout the rub.
  4. To store your barbecue rub, transfer it to an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Place the container in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard, to protect the rub from light and moisture, which can degrade its flavor over time.
  5. For optimal flavor, use the barbecue rub within a few months. This ensures that the spices remain potent and aromatic, providing the best seasoning for your brisket and ribs.
