Chili Powder Blend

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Chili Powder Blend

Chili powder blend is an essential ingredient for the robust and hearty dishes of Texas, often serving as the cornerstone of a traditional Texas chili or a warming stew. This blend's origins are deeply rooted in the Southwestern United States, where it has been a staple in kitchens for generations. It's a versatile mix that can be found in a wide array of recipes, providing a consistent base of flavor that cooks return to time and again.

This blend should deliver a bold and balanced taste with a gentle heat from the ground chiles, a warm earthiness from the cumin, and a hint of herbal brightness from the oregano. The garlic powder and coriander add depth, while the fine sea salt ties everything together, enhancing the overall flavor profile. Its complexity makes it a reliable ally not just in chili, but in any dish that calls for a touch of Southwestern flair.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspground chiles
  • 1 tbspcumin
  • 1 tbsporegano
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tspcoriander

Method

  1. Place a dry skillet over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of ground chiles, 1 tablespoon of cumin, and 1 teaspoon of coriander to the skillet. Stir the spices continuously with a wooden spoon to prevent burning. Toast them until they release a fragrant aroma and the cumin seeds turn a shade darker, indicating they are perfectly toasted.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the spices to cool completely in the pan. This cooling step is crucial as it prevents moisture from forming when you grind or mix the spices, which could affect the texture and shelf life of your blend.
  3. Once cooled, transfer the toasted spices to a mixing bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of oregano, 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, and 1 tablespoon of fine sea salt. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a spoon or whisk until all the ingredients are evenly combined, ensuring a consistent flavor throughout the blend.
  4. Transfer the chili powder blend into an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store the container in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard, to protect the spices from light and moisture, which can degrade their flavor over time.
  5. For optimal flavor, use the chili powder blend within a few months. This ensures that the spices retain their vibrant aroma and potency, making it an excellent base for Texas chili and stews.
