Chinese Chili Salt 2

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Chinese Chili Salt 2

Chinese Chili Salt 2 is a pantry staple that finds its place in countless Chinese households. This blend is not tied to a specific festival or occasion but is a constant companion to everyday meals, offering a simple way to elevate the most humble of dishes. Whether sprinkled over stir-fries or used as a finishing touch on grilled meats, its presence is subtle yet transformative.

Expect a bold, warm kick from the chili flakes, balanced by the earthiness of cumin and the savory depth of garlic powder. The fine sea salt binds these flavors together, creating a seasoning that is both robust and versatile. This spice mix brings a dynamic edge to your meals, inviting you to explore its potential across a variety of dishes.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. Place a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes and 1 teaspoon of cumin to the skillet. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know they're ready when the chili flakes darken slightly and the cumin releases a warm, nutty aroma.
  2. Remove the skillet from heat and allow the toasted spices to cool completely in the pan. This cooling step is crucial to prevent the spices from cooking further and potentially burning when you grind them.
  3. Once the spices are cooled, transfer them to a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Add 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder. Grind or mix the ingredients until they are evenly combined and the mixture has a consistent texture.
  4. Transfer the blended Chinese Chili Salt 2 to an airtight container. Make sure the container is clean and dry to prevent moisture from affecting the blend.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, to preserve the spices' potency. For the best aroma and flavor, use the blend within a few months.
