Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Eastern European Chili Salt 2

A staple in the Eastern European pantry, this chili salt blend is crafted for those who appreciate a subtle kick in their everyday meals. It's not reserved for special occasions, but rather finds its home on the table throughout the year, ready to be sprinkled over soups, stews, or even a simple slice of fresh bread with butter. The blend reflects an easy embrace of spice, showcasing the region's growing affection for bolder flavors.

Expect a harmonious balance where the heat of chili flakes meets the earthy notes of cumin, all rounded by the familiar warmth of garlic powder. The fine sea salt acts as the unifying element, enhancing each component without overpowering. This mixture delivers a warming tingle, with just enough heat to wake up the palate, making it a versatile addition to any Eastern European dish.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. Begin by selecting a small, dry skillet. Place it over medium-low heat to gently toast the spices. Add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes and 1 teaspoon of cumin to the skillet. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know they are ready when the chili flakes darken slightly and release a warm, spicy aroma.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the toasted spices to cool completely. This step is crucial to prevent any moisture from forming when you grind them, which can affect the texture and shelf life of the blend.
  3. Once cooled, transfer the toasted spices to a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Add 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder. Grind or mix until all the ingredients are evenly combined and the texture is consistent throughout.
  4. Carefully transfer the blended Eastern European Chili Salt 2 into an airtight container. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed to maintain the freshness of the spices.
  5. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight. This will help preserve the vibrant flavors and aromas of the blend.
  6. For optimal taste and aroma, use the Eastern European Chili Salt 2 within a few months. This ensures that the spices retain their full potency and enhance your dishes as intended.
