Filipino Chili Salt 2

Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Filipino Chili Salt 2

Filipino Chili Salt 2 is a pantry staple that finds its way into countless Filipino dishes, adding a burst of flavor at any meal. Whether sprinkled over fresh fruit for an afternoon snack or used to season grilled meats during weekend gatherings, this versatile blend is a beloved companion to the Filipino table, ready to enhance dishes with its fiery kick.

Expect a delightful interplay of spicy heat and savory depth, with the chili flakes offering a fiery punch that is tempered by the earthy warmth of cumin and the subtle umami of garlic powder. Fine sea salt ties these bold flavors together, creating a seasoning that invites a second taste, and then another.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. Begin by placing a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes to the skillet. Stir the chili flakes continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know they're ready when they release a warm, spicy aroma and deepen slightly in color, which should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Once the chili flakes are toasted, remove the skillet from the heat. Allow the chili flakes to cool completely in the skillet. This cooling step is crucial to prevent the residual heat from cooking the other spices when combined.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the cooled chili flakes with 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt, 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of cumin. Use a whisk or a spoon to mix the ingredients thoroughly until they are evenly distributed.
  4. Transfer the blended spices into an airtight container. Ensure the lid is sealed tightly to maintain the freshness of the spices. Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, to protect it from light and moisture.
  5. For optimal flavor, use the Filipino Chili Salt 2 within a few months. This ensures the spices retain their full aroma and potency, enhancing your dishes with their vibrant flavors.
