Serves about 1/2 cup Spice Mix vegan, Spice Mixes

Indonesian Chili Salt

Indonesian Chili Salt is a vibrant pantry blend that brings a fiery kick to the Indonesian table. This simple yet potent mix of chili flakes, fine sea salt, garlic powder, and cumin is a staple in many Indonesian households, adding a burst of flavor to a variety of dishes.

The blend is known for its bold and spicy profile, with the heat of the chili flakes balanced by the savory depth of garlic and the warm, earthy notes of cumin. It's a versatile seasoning that enhances everything from grilled meats to stir-fried vegetables, providing a taste that is both familiar and exciting to those who enjoy Indonesian cuisine.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbspchili flakes
  • 2 tbspfine sea salt
  • 1 tbspgarlic powder
  • 1 tspcumin

Method

  1. Place a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of chili flakes and 1 teaspoon of cumin to the skillet. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even toasting. You'll know it's ready when the chili flakes darken slightly and a warm, spicy aroma fills the air.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and immediately transfer the toasted spices to a plate to cool completely. This prevents any residual heat from continuing to cook the spices, which could lead to bitterness.
  3. Once the spices have cooled, combine them with 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder in a small bowl. Mix thoroughly to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed throughout the blend.
  4. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store it in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard, to preserve its vibrant flavors.
  5. For the best aroma and taste, use the Indonesian Chili Salt within a few months. This blend is perfect for adding a spicy, savory kick to your favorite Indonesian dishes.
